OK Composer like Sounding Out was a concert series that started in 2003 as an open call to music students at CalArts. Its core focus was to encourage young composers to create new works and encourage critical dialogue and further the development of experimental compositional practices. It was a student run and curated series that created a substantial social and artistic fabric for the student body. In 2005/06 I started co-curating the series with James Orsher who had taken over the task of curating a year earlier. In 2006/07, I turned OK Composer into a bi-montly series with the great help of Ben Mayock, Andy Jasenak and John P. Hastings. Themes that we started to explore were the audiences' implicit participation, the notion of proscenium and how work can activate a space, inform other pieces and resonate across their prescribed durational boundaries. Here are a few select performances from OK Composer : |
