Tape music, that which was popularized shortly after the turn of the 20th century by the French, has become somewhat extinct. After William T. Russell's invention, the compact disc (CD-ROM), digital technologies quickly replaced their analog predecessors (tape, phono-records, punch cards, etc.). Musicians and composers, however still refer to certain kinds of music as 'tape music.' Because of editing, transportation, and archival ease, this music is performed (played back) using a computer that reads digital information. Contemporary tape music is not tape music at all - its music for digital playback device.

This is my starting point.
